Dear Reader,
I’ve read three of ‘Nathan’s books and each feels like a love letter to love.
Every word on every page of every book of ‘Nathan’s that I’ve read feels like it was chosen with tender loving care. There are few writers who can have me in tears or full-on swooning with just a few words, and ‘Nathan is in my top 2.
Faux Ho Ho is less Christmas-y, Felix Navidad is more Christmas-y, and both are must-reads any time of year. I would know because I read the Faux Ho Ho audiobook in August of 2022.
Though there’s no sex on the page, I still have to call these books sweet and spicy, because these characters have such a way with words and glances and forearm-observations and honest-beard-facts as to make me swoon and sweat, even as I’m trying to look cool while walking a frolicking labradoodle through the heat of summer.
A labradoodle named Bowie who is not mine, but who I dog-sit every summer for a month, and he needs a lot of walking so I do a lot of audiobook reading during that time. You simply MUST read the Faux Ho Ho audiobook, as well as Handmade Holidays, because narrator Giancarlo Herrera is a gem.
Faux Ho Ho: Oh, be still my nerd-loving heart. I just want to wrap Silas in bubble wrap and warm hugs and keep him from every getting hurt ever again. Thankfully he’s got Dino to wrap him up in his big strong arms and his words and his insight and his patience and his humour. I laughed out loud so many times while reading this book, but I can’t even tease about any of it without spoiling the set-ups. Just read it!
Felix Navidad: Is it even a ‘Nathan Burgoine Romance if I don’t cry my face off at least once? With Felix Navidad it was more than once, as ‘Nathan takes the painful layers of life and shows us exactly why the cost of love—of romantic love, of friendship, of familial, of self love—is grief, and why that price is worth it.
Also, Kevin’s forearms, just sayin’.
‘Nathan Burgoine covers a lot of heart with these novellas, and I can honestly say that both his inconspicuous observations and the blunt commentary made by his characters sticks with me long after the read is complete.
Get thee to ‘Nathan Burgoine’s Little Village now!
Love and toques,
Catherine
