Amy Lea: Set On You
Dear Reader,
Amy Lea won me over with my not-favourite enemies-to-lovers trope very quickly because of Scott and Crystal’s nemesorial flirting at the gym. (I don’t think nemesorial is a word, but it should be). The other thing that won me over was Amy’s thoughtful content warning letter at the start of the book regarding body shaming, cancer talk, and also how a book about workouts could be triggering. Love!

I don’t remember content I’ve consumed clearly, often even right after I’ve been entertained, (and this is why I love rereading!), but one scene that really stuck with me involves fairy lights, Amy up a tree, and a thunderstorm. A beautiful balance of conflict, tension, real danger, and tender loving care. I might have been stressed out enough to flip to the end of the scene to find out how everyone fared, and that speaks highly to the sincerity of the storytelling.
Oh, also: that bathtub scene is going to live rent free in my head for a long, long time.
This entire cast of characters has so much heart, and softness, and great comedic timing. I absolutely love how conflicts are resolved, how in-depth the communication is between characters (and there’s a lot going on), and the blunt display of the anxiety about creating and posting content that a social media influencer has to do in order to earn a living. It is a job, in many ways just like any other—something I hadn’t entirely considered before.
At the end of the book I was treated to a preview of Amy Lea’s next book, Exes and O’s, and you know what? I bought it!
Love and bakeapples,
Catherine
